My WHY
|
Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a teacher. I would set up my dolls with pens and paper in front of my imaginary classroom, and teach them that 2 + 2 = 4. I remember one day when I was in the 5th grade, and my mother dropped me off at school. As I reluctantly stepped out of her car, I sighed and said, "I wish I was the teacher today instead of a student." So, years later when I walked into a school building as a teacher for the very first time, my eyes welled with emotion. My dream was now my reality.
I relished my years in the classroom, and time and time again felt my experience confirm that I was doing exactly what I was meant to do. Yet, something nagged at me. Too often I found myself frustrated by my inability to help students who needed my help the most. Students who couldn't seem to focus, or didn't seem to feel motivated to learn. Students who were frequently engaged in behaviors that harmed their relationships and sense of self, as well as their academic performance. Often these students were grappling with ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences) too, and I was desperate to help them. I dove into the research and professional development around PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports), SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support). I read books and attended workshops on behavior management, mindfulness, restorative justice, neuro-education, resilience, grit, growth mindset, cultural competence, racial justice, trauma-informed classrooms...Through it all, I fell in love with the movement around infusing public education with work around positive behavior and social emotional learning. I believed, that the key to helping ALL of my students, was following this path.
That is why I became a PBSES coach. I want to be a part of this incredible work in the Issaquah School District. As a global community, we are still learning about what children need and deserve in order to be their best selves. I feel so grateful to be working with staff, families, and students at Newcastle to support the amazing PBSES work being done in our school. GO LIONS!
